Five Unforgettable Days at Sonadora Resort: My Baja Adventure in Los Barriles
When I think about the perfect vacation, I think about a trip that balances adventure, relaxation, incredible food, and unforgettable memories, surrounded by my favorite people. That's exactly what we found during our five days at Sonadora Resort in Los Barriles, Baja California Sur.
From exploring a hidden desert oasis to catching the first sailfish of the season, every day brought something new.
Day 1: Arriving in Paradise
My family and I’s trip started the moment we landed. Sonadora arranged a shuttle to pick us up from the airport, and our driver was waiting right on time with a sign, making the 1.5-hour journey to Los Barriles completely stress-free.
We arrived to sunshine, ocean views, and the peaceful atmosphere Sonadora is known for. After settling in, we spent the afternoon relaxing by the pool, reading, and catching up on a little work while soaking in the Baja scenery.
That evening, we were treated to an authentic Mexican feast prepared by Chef Yadi, paired with delicious hand-squeezed margaritas from Cristian, Sonadora's incredible property manager. Cristian also made his famous homemade guacamole, he knew we’d be hungry after the flight.
Since it was my birthday, the owners surprised me with a beautiful margarita cake that was as delicious as it was memorable. We ended the evening watching the sun dip below the Sea of Cortez—a perfect start to the trip.
Day 2: A Hidden Oasis in the Desert
The next morning, my family and I set out on one of the most unique excursions I've ever experienced.
We hopped on 4x4s and spent about an hour riding along sandy trails through the desert and beside the ocean. Racing over the terrain, feeling the wind and sun, was exhilarating.
After a hot and dusty ride, we arrived at something I never expected to see in the Baja desert: a true oasis!
Towering palm trees surrounded crystal-clear hot and cold springs tucked away in the middle of nowhere. Cool shade, gentle breezes, and fresh spring water created an almost surreal experience.
The Sonadora team guided us to the springs and grilled an incredible lunch waiting for us, complete with margaritas and some of the best grilled steak tacos we've ever eaten.
If I had to pick one highlight of the entire trip, this adventure was one to remember!
Day 3: Catching the First Sailfish of the Season
Day three started before sunrise as we headed out for a sportfishing excursion. After cruising for a while, the action started.
We hooked a massive sailfish—the first sailfish of the season! The fish was enormous, nearly the size of a child, with a spectacular sail and bill. It put up a fight and was one of the most beautiful fish I've ever seen.
After admiring the catch, we safely released it back into the Sea of Cortez.
The adventure didn't stop there. The team took us snorkeling and diving for scallops, allowing us to gather our own fresh seafood straight from the ocean.
Later, they prepared the scallops along with fresh dorado, creating one of those meals that you'll remember long after the trip is over.
Day 4: Baja Beach Day
After several action-packed days, we slowed things down a bit.
We ATV'd to a nearby beach, spent time snorkeling, and discovered all kinds of marine life, including colorful fish, shells, and even a lobster.
A Bloody Mary by the water made for the perfect midday break before heading back to Sonadora to relax poolside.
That evening's surf and turf dinner featured steak, shrimp, and lobster—another meal that reminded us just how spoiled we'd become during our stay.
Day 5: The Perfect Farewell
For our final evening, we boarded a sunset cruise along the Baja coastline.
The sunset was easily one of the most spectacular I've ever witnessed. The sky lit up with brilliant colors against the contrast of the mountains and blue water, as we enjoyed a few too many margaritas, music, dancing, and plenty of laughter.
We snapped family photos, sang along to our favorite songs, and soaked in every moment.
Back at the resort, we enjoyed another incredible meal before ending the night around a bonfire under a sky full of stars.
It was the perfect ending to a truly perfect trip.
The Food Deserves Its Own Section
One thing that made this experience stand out was the food and the service. Chef Yadi prepared every breakfast, lunch, and dinner during our stay, and each meal somehow managed to be better than the last. By the end of the trip, I think all of us had gained a few pounds—and not a single one of us regretted it.

Five days somehow felt both packed with adventure and completely relaxing at the same time. When we got home my husband said “Wow that vacation brought me back to life. I feel like myself again!”
